We thought our nursery customers would love it when we created a four-acre outdoor nursery that they could wander through and choose the seasonal plants they wanted to take home. Not only did we feel that this was an excellent way to provide them with great plants, but that it would also give them some landscaping ideas.
We were right. Our customer did love our outdoor shopping experience. It was one of our best years ever. The only thing we didn’t count on. The amount of damage our customers would do to the ground. We had created walkways out of flat stones, but this didn’t seem to be enough to discourage our customer from trampling our plants. Plus, things got muddy when it rained. If we were going to repeat the same experience another year, we needed a better system.
Our salvation came in the form of this website: http://www.wickcraft.com/Walkways.aspx. Although the walkways are typically used in marinas and as commercial boardwalks, we thought they would be the perfect addition to our nursery. We were right.
It only took a short while for the marine track and lake boat dock to be installed. Once that was complete, we customized it by adding a handrail. When customers wanted to see a plant they could bend kneel to get close to it, but the handrail created a barrier that saved our young plants from getting crushed under careless feet. Some of our customers have liked the look so well, they’re considering getting something similar for their small, at home gardens.
Since the Wickcraft walkways have been designed to be used at marinas, the heavy moisture we expose our to doesn’t seem to be a problem.
We’ve noticed that in addition to not losing as many plants, the indoor section of our nursery has also stayed a great deal cleaner than it did last year. Our customers aren’t tracking in nearly as much mud and debris as they did when we first opened our outdoor garden.
Tending the outdoor garden has also gotten much easier. The new walkway is wide enough that our employees can drive a four wheeler hooked to a utility cart through the outdoor garden and do chores in half the amount of time it took when they were struggling to navigate the paving stones. Not only do we have happier employees, but we didn’t have to hire quite as many as we did the previous year, even though we’ve been busier.
We’re so grateful that we found the Wickcraft walkway. It’s been a wonderful took for our business. It has made it possible for us to keep our outdoor garden. We’re talking about expanding, and if we do, Wickcraft will be part of that expansion.
